Ranchi, July 30 (Reporter) Two people were killed and seven others injured as 18 coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail going from Howrah to Mumbai derailed near the Barabamboo station of the Chakradharpur Railway Division of South Eastern Railway in Jharkhand early Tuesday, officials said.
The exact reason for the derailment is being ascertained, they said.
Sources said that the accident occurred when the Howrah-Mumbai Mail collided with the wagons of a goods train which had derailed minutes before the passenger train was moving between Rajkharsawan West Outer and Barabamboo.
South Eastern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Om Prakash Charan told UNI here that the 18 derailed coaches of Howrah-Mumbai Mail included 16 passenger coaches, one pantry coach, and one power car.
He said that seven people were injured in this accident, of whom two were serious.
The injured were given first aid by the Railways' medical team, officials said, adding that they have now been taken to Chakradharpur for better treatment.
Railway sources said that an NDRF team has been sent from Patna for relief and rescue.
The passengers of the train involved in this accident have been sent to another nearby railway station via buses.
Following the incident, the Indian Railway cancelled a few trains, including Howrah-Kantabaji Express 22861, Kharagpur-Dhanbad Express 08015/18019, and Howrah Barbil Express 12021/12022 Express, running on this route due to delays, and some trains were stopped midway.
