8 Odisha districts to face heatwave this week

Bhubaneswar, June 10 (Reporter) Collectors of eight Odisha districts were asked to take all precautions to meet any eventuality in view of likely heatwave conditions predicted by the India Meteorological Department even as reports of eight deaths due to sunstroke over the last 72 hours were given. The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Office asked the Collectors of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Bolangir, Boudh and Nuapada to remain alert in view of the heat wave alert for the next five days. The IMD has forecast that there will be gradual rise in day temperature by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius during the next five days and there will be no change in many places. Hot and humid conditions are likely to prevail in many places across Odisha during the next five days. The Collectors were asked to use public announcement system advising people to take precautions. Hospitals have also been asked to be in readiness. Outside workers have been asked not to work in open sunlight from 11 AM to 3 PM. IMD sources said at least 20 locations in Odisha the day temperature on Monday recorded above 40 degree Celsius with Nuapada being the hottest place in the state with mercury rising to 44 degrees Celsius. As many as four places in Boudh, Parlakhemundi, Bolangir and Baripada the day temperature recorded above 42 degree Celsius. A release from the SRC office said as on June 5 ,a total 151 alleged sunstroke death cases were reported by the collectors. During the last 72 hours eight more alleged sun stroke death cases have been reported. The SRC office said during this summer cumulatively 159 alleged sunstroke death cases have been reported and as per detailed inquiry conducted so far 41 deaths are due to sunstroke and 45 cases are rejected not due to Sunstroke.The remaining 73 cases are under inquiry at the district level. IMD Bhubaneswar Centre Director Manorama Mohanty told reporters there is no likelihood of further advancement of monsoon in other parts of Odisha during the next five days. Mohanty said the conditions due to south-westerly winds are not favourable for the further advancement of the monsoon in the state. The Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some more parts of South Odisha on June 8 last and the monsoon covered some parts of Malkangiri district .The IMD then had indicated that the conditions are now favourable for further advancement of the monsoon into other parts of Odisha in the next few days. However, the IMD on Monday said some parts of Odisha will experience heatwave conditions in the next five days while some other parts will experience thunderstorm activities. "The Coastal districts of the state will experience excess humidity levels,” Mohanty said, adding that there is a possibility of a rise in rainfall activities after five days in Odisha...////...
