Chennai, Jan 12 (Reporter) After the Main opposition and its allky, the DMDK decided to boycott the February five bypoll to the Erode Assembly seat, the BJP-led NDA also chose to boycott it, virtually making it a no-contest. BJP Tamil Nadu Unit President K Annamalai made this announcement after holding talks with the NDA allies, including the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) led by former Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan. Yesterday, the AIADMK and the DMDK, both former allies of the BJP, announced that they would boycott the bypoll as the ruling DMK, which has chosen to contest it and also announced its candidate, will again unleash its manpower and money power and the elections would not be held in a free and fair manner as witnessed in the previous bye-elections held to the seat in 2023. In a statement posted on X handle, Mr Annamalai alleged that Tamil Nadu was pushed to the dark under the four-year long DMK rule which was anti-people and steeped in corruption in all departments, besides deterioration of law and order, unemployment and lack of security for women, children, elders, government and police department officials. Accusing the DMK government of functioning against the Constitution given by Dr B R Ambedkar, he said "people who are witnessing these sufferings have been saying that it is not a Dravidian Model but a Disaster Model government". Recalling the past experiences in the bypoll to the seat, Mr Annamalai said the main aim was to oust the DMK from power in the 2026 Assembly polls and the BJP-led NDA was working towards that goal. "In the interest of public, all the alliance leaders of NDA discussed in detail and decided to boycott the Erode East bypoll", he added. The bypoll was necessitated following the death of Senior Congress leader EVKS Elangovan last month, and the Congress, which had held the seat in 2021 and 2023, has conceded it to the DMK this time following a request made by its President and Chief Minister M K Stalin, who announced Mr V C Chandrakumar as the party's candidate for the bypoll. The bypoll is the second in two years. This is the third election to this seat since 2021 in which Mr Elangovan's son Thiru Mahan E.Ve.Ra was elected to the Assembly for the first time. However, his untimely death resulted in bypoll held on February 28, 2023 and it was won by Mr Elangovan, who is also a former Union Minister and former TNCC President, by highest ever margin of over 66,000 votes and entered the State Assembly after a gap of 39 years. However, Mr Elangovan's unfortunate death last month, has now resulted in yet another bypoll to the seat, which the Congress decided to give it to the DMK...////...
