Chennai, Dec 26(Reporter) Scores of leaders of the main Opposition AIADMK, including senior leader and former Minister D Jayakumar, and those from BJP, including former Tamil Nadu Unit President Ms Tamilisai Soundararajan, were arrested on Thursday for staging protest demonstrations condemning the sexual assault incident on a girl student at the prestigious State-run Anna University campus. Since the leaders, functionaries and cadres of both the parties, staged the agitation without prior permission they were arrested, police said. While the AIADMK staged the demonstration in front of the Anna University campus on the arterial Sardar Patel Road, throwing the normal traffic out of gear, the BJP staged the agitation in front of Valluvar Kottam and it was led by Ms Tamilisai Soundararajan. During the protest, the AIADMK leaders shouted slogans denouncing the ruling DMK as the incident had taken place in the world famous Anna University campus and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. They also alleged that the law and order situation in the state had deteriorated and the crime graph was on the rise. When police arrested Mr Jayakumar and scores of AIADMK cadres, heated arguments ensued, following which the AIADMK cadres, including a large number of women, staged a road roko on the arterial road. As the road roko led to massive traffic pile up, police have advised the people to avoid using the stretch and diverted traffic in view of the agitation. Meanwhile, the BJP's Tamilisai and more than 300 party cadres were arrested for staging a protest near Valluvar Kottam. They also shouted slogans against the DMK government and claimed that the suspect arrested was a functionary of the DMK, which was however, denied by the ruling party. BJP State President K Annamalai condemned the state government and the police for arresting the party workers for staging peaceful protest demanding justice. He also claimed that the FIR filed by the police contained the name of the sexual assault victim and her address and condemned it saying it was illegal. He also alleged that the naming of the student was to conceal the real culprit, who he claimed belonged to the DMK. Strongly denying this, Tamil Nadu Law Minister S Reghupathy told reporters that the arrested suspect was not at a member of the DMK. He also asserted that the victim's name was not disclosed in the FIR and said neither the state government nor the Chief Minister had no intention to protect the culprit and would ensure that stringent punishment was given to him as per law. He also said steps were being taken to ensure that such incidents did not recur in the state and the DMK government always give safety for women and children. It may be recalled that in a shocking incident that triggered outrage, a girl student at the prestigious State-run Anna University campus in Chennai was sexually assaulted by two people, triggering tension and protests in the sprawling campus. Reports said the girl, second year engineering student, was talking to her boy friend--a third year student--when the two culprits, threatened her, beat up her boy friend and sexually assaulted her on the night of December 23. The incident triggered protests from various organisations including SFI and AIDWA and almost all the Opposition parties strongly condemned the incident that took place in a prestigious campus and said the incident has led to security concerns among women. They also alleged that the incident was yet another example of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Acting on a complaint from the victim, the Kotturpuram police arrested a 37-year-old man, identified as Gnansekaran, who runs a biriyani shop on the foothpath near the campus and was found to be involved in several waylaying and robbery cases, police said in a release. After preliminary investigations, he was produced before a Saidapet Metropolitan Magistrate Court today and remanded in judicial custody. As the accused, who had confessed to committing the offence, sustained injuries on his leg and hand after suffering a fall, he was admitted to the Government Stanley Medical College for treatment. Since his entire left leg from the knee roll to the foot, was wrapped under flour bandage (the normal treatment followed to set right the bones due to a fracture), he would be shifted to Puzhal Central prison after treatment, police said...////...
