Chennai, Oct 26 (Reporter) The Tamil Nadu government was taking all efforts to complete the
second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project on time, Chief Minister MK Stalin said on
Saturday.
Mr Stalin made his assurance at a review meeting held on Phase-2 works, spread over
three stretches, at the Chennai Metro Rail Limited headquarters in the city in which Union
Urban Affairs and Housing Minister Manohar Lal Khattar attended via video-conferencing.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Stalin thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accepting
his request and according sanction for the Rs 63,246 crore Phase-2 project spread over
a network of 118.9 km.
Mr Stalin said he has advised the officials to expedite the implementation of the project
and complete it on schedule.
“My government and the officials are making all efforts to complete the project within the
stipulated time,” Stalin said.
He also said Rs 19,229 crore has been spent so far on the project which is progressing
at a quick pace.
Starting his address by recalling the Rs 22,150 crore Phase-I (spread over two stretches
covering 54.1 km) launch in 2007 jointly by the State and Union governments during the
then DMK regime headed by late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, he said the people of the
city were immensely benefitted as it provided a hassle free travel.
As many as 3.5 lakh people were travelling in the Chennai Metro services daily .
The project was aimed at easing the burgeoning traffic congestion in the city.
Later, talking to reporters, Mr Stalin said the Union Cabinet had already gave its nod for the
Phase-2 project and announced allocation of funds.
He said he requested the Union Minister to provide the allocated funds for the project at the
