Bhubaneswar, June 1 (Reporter) Notwithstanding the hot sweltering summer heat and high humidity, an approximate 22.64 percent of the total 99.61 lakh voters exercised their franchise by 11 am on the final day of election on Saturday in six Lok Sabha and 42 Assembly seats in Odisha.
Two tragic and unfortunate incidents were reported during polling on Saturday in which a polling officer and a voter died at two different places.
Sources said a Booth-level officer, a teacher, lost his senses in booth no 157 at Olei Chandanpur in Binjharpur Assembly constituency of Jajpur district. He was rushed to Binjharpur medical but the doctor declared him dead.
In another incident an old man collapsed while standing in the queue at Iswarpur in booth no 159 under Nilagiri Assembly constituency. He was rushed to the nearest hospital but the doctor declared him dead.
Though the doctors have not specified any reason for the death, it is suspected that the death might have occurred due to high humidity and heat wave conditions.
The voter turnout which was only 7.69 percent till 9 am ut picked up in the next two hours to 22.64 percent as the voters braved the hot summer and high humidity, and lined up for hours to cast their ballots.
At many places, the electorates, mostly the senior citizens, had alleged that there was no arrangement of water and ORS at the booths and also no proper shed arrangements near the booth.
Sources said the voter turnout in Balasore Parliamentary constituency was 27.66 percent, the highest till 11 am, while Jajpur Lok Sabha constituency recorded the lowest voting turnout of 17.10 percent.
Kendrapara Parliamentary constituency recorded 24.03 percent, Jagatsinghpur 23.01 percent, Mayurbhanj recorded 22.25 percent, and Bhadrak recorded 21.50 percent polling till 11 am.
Similarly, the Basta Assembly constituency recorded 29.60 percent voting, the highest, among the assembly constituencies, while the Barchana Assembly seat registered the lowest polling percentage of only 6 percent.
The other Assembly constituencies which recorded high voter turnout are Jaleswar (28.75 percent) 28.70 percent in Soro Assembly constituency, 28.52 percent in Balasore, 27.51 percent in Bhograi, 27.25 percent in Remuna and 27.16 percent in Nilgiri.
Besides, Barchana Assembly constituency which recorded 6 percent polling, other Assembly constituencies which also recorded low polling are s Dharmasala 15 percent, Bari 15.75 percent,Dhamnagar 17.30 percent, Bhadrak 18.75 percent, Jajpur 18 percent and Korei 19 percent
Except in Saipur where a scuffle was reported between two groups of people, the polling was largely peaceful and no untoward incidents have been reported from anywhere so far.
A total of 99.6 lakh voters will decide the fate of 66 candidates in the six Lok Sabha seats and 394 candidates contesting for the 42 Assembly seats.
The electorate expressed dissatifaction as polling was delayed by hours in several places due to glitches in the EVM machine.
As many as 10,882 booths have been set up to help the voters exercise their franchise. Out of the total 10,882 booths, 1,400 booths are managed by women.
About 36,000 personnel including 126 companies of CAPF, 86 platoons of Odisha Armed Police, and 20,500 civil police have been deployed to ensure peaceful polling...////...
