Chennai, Dec 28 (Reporter) Asserting that safety of the students was
paramount and non-negotiable in the wake of alleged sexual assault
on a girl student at the prestigious State-run Anna University campus,
Tamil Nadu Governor-Chancellor R N Ravi on Saturday directed the
Varsity authorities to take immediate action on safety and security
issue, and appealed to the students and their parents not to panic.
"The Governor has stated that the safety and well-being of our students are
non-negotiable", the Raj Bhavan said in a communique issued this evening
hours after Mr Ravi visited the University, reviewed the security measures
and separately interacted with girls and boys students.
The Governor also instructed the University administration to take immediate
action on the safety and security issues raised by the students, it said.
Mr Ravi also advised the students and their parents not to panic and directed
the University administration to ensure a culture of safety and accountability.
It said following the deeply distressing incident of sexual assault reported
within the campus of the Anna University, Chennai, the Governor-Chancellor
visited the University today to review the security measures, interact with the
students and to ensure that immediate and decisive action is taken to
safeguard the students.
During the visit, the Governor-Chancellor met the Registrar and other senior
faculty members, interacted with them and reviewed the security measures
within the University campus.
He interacted with the students (girls and boys separately) and patiently
listened to their perspectives, recommendations and suggestions in order
to make the campus a more safe and secure place...////...
