Chennai, Dec 26 (Reporter) As the alleged sexual assault of a girl student in the
State-run Anna University campus dominating the Tamil Nadu's political scene
and the Opposition parties taking up cudgels against the ruling DMK, Greater
Chennai City Police Commissioner A Arun ruled out any laxity on the part of
the police in arresting the accused and said the victim was safe and secure.
Firmly denying that there was any slackness on the part of the police in arresting
the accused, Mr Arun, addressing a press conference on Thursday evening said,
as of now only one accused was involved in the incident.
He was arrested in a swift operation and remanded in judicial custody.
As the Opposition parties claimed that the arrested accused was a member of the
DMK Party, a point stoutly denied by the ruling dispensation, Mr Arun said “We are
not bothered about the political affiliation of the accused, whichever party he might
belong to."
"Within a day of receiving the complaint, we have arrested the accused, Gnanasekaran,
after holding inquiries with many suspects", he said.
He also said the victim is safe and secure and she was satisfied about the progress in
the case,” the Commissioner said.
On the reported leakage of the FIR filed based on the complaint filed by the victim,
the Chennai City Police Chief said, downloading or leaking it or posting it in social
media was an offence.
The leakage of FIR in the public domain has caused some embarrassing moments
for the Police, which acted swiftly and blocked the FIR online to prevent it from
downloading.
He also denied the Opposition allegations that the FIR contained the identity of the
victim.
As per the rules, the name of the victim should not be mentioned in the FIR and a
copy was give to the victim as per rules.
He said the FIR copies was a confidential document as it would contain several
details about the case based on the which the investigations will progress and it
should not be shared with anyone.
"Since several political parties have raised the issue we have registered a case
on the leakage. We will soon find out who is behind it, arrest him and take stringent
action against him", Mr Arun said.
Stating that FIRs are uploaded online, he said those who have downloaded it could
have shared it on social media.
On the details in the FIR over which questions are raised, he said it was the bounden
duty of the police to record all the details given by the affected victim.
"Now the option of downloading FIRs has been blocked and police have warned of
stringent action against those spreading FIRs or posting them on social media", he
said.
Sharing details about the arrested accused Gnanasekaran, the Commissioner said
though there was no cases of his alleged involvement in sexual assault or sexual
harassment cases since 2013, he was a habitual offender involved in incidents of
crimes like robbery, burglary, waylaying and house-breakings.
He was convicted in six of the about 15 cases registered against him and the rest
are under investigation.
Talking about enhancing security arrangement at the premier higher educational
institution, Mr Arun said of the total 70 CCTV cameras installed in the campus,
only 56 are functional at present.
Security has been strengthened in the campus after holding consultations with the
Varsity authorities, he said, and assured that the probe would be speeded up and
the accused punished...////...
