At least 35 students hospitalised after suspected ammonia gas leak in Chennai

Chennai, Oct 25 (Reporter) At least 35 students of a private school in the north Chennai area of Tiruvottriyur, were admitted to hospital, after they fainted and complained irritation in their eyes following a gas leak on Friday. Police sources said all the students were safe and were immediately shifted to a hospital, where the government and the civic authorities have made special arrangements for their treatment. Soon after the news spread, panicked parents rushed to the school to take their wards to their homes and demanded immediate steps to shift those affected to the hospital, besides action against the school management for an act of negligence. Following the unrest, the school management immediately declared a holiday for the day today and also for tomorrow. Meanwhile, apart from police, revenue, fire service, pollution control board officials and special teams from NDRF were inspecting the premises to ascertain whether it was an ammonia gas leak, though reports said that oxygen cylinders were being shifted to the lab located in the second and third floor of the school. Reports also said that the gas leak would have emanated from a nearby Chemical factory. However, the parents of the students, negated this theory, stating that if it is so then people in the locality should have also been affected. But only the students in the school were affected. So the leak is sure to have emanated from the school lab, the parents told TV channels. Meanwhile, the inspection by the authorities including the NDRF teams are still on. North Chennai DMK MP Kathir Anand also rushed to the spot, shifted the students to the hospital and monitoring the developments. The incident occurred at the Victory Matric Higher Secondary School and all the students were immediately evacuated as a precautionary measure.
