Kolkata, Oct 24 (Reporter) Alert sounded in all coastal districts of West Bengal after IMD predicted that the cyclonic storm Dana is likely to hit the state on Thursday evening.
NDRF teams have been placed on standby and Air and Rail traffic suspended their operations as precautionary measures.
Eastern Railway has suspended over two dozen trains and the South Eastern Railway has suspended some 180 long-distance trains in phases from October 23 to October 27.
Railways is taking proactive measures to minimize cyclone Impact with focus on relief operations, passenger safety, and infrastructure restoration; Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
While reviewing the preparedness to deal with Dana he said 9 war rooms were established across 2 states ( Odisha and West Bengal) to promptly restore rail services amid red alert along the east coast.
" Adequate arrangements including food and water have been made at key stations to mitigate the impact of high wind force. Ensure maximum preparedness with minimal disruption," he said in a message.
"Given cyclone DANA's impact on the coastal region of West Bengal, including Kolkata, it has been decided to suspend the flight operations from 1800 IST on 24.10.2024 to 0900 IST on 25.10.2024 due to predicted heavy winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall at Kolkata," a Kolkata Airport Twitter said on Thursday.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force have been placed on standby. The Indian Navy was also kept on alert to assist the civilian in case the situation warranted, said a source.
The Indian Coast Guard and Coastal police have been alerting the people not to move near the water bodies anticipating storms and surging of water once the Dana starts landfall in the coastal districts and neighbouring towns and cities...////...
