Kanpur, Jan 12 (Reporter) Mohammad Kaif (4-14), debutant Suraj Sindhu
Jaiswal (3-20) and Ishan Porel (2-24) unleashed a fiery bowling
performance as visiting Bengal skittled out host Uttar Pradesh for 60
runs in 20.5 overs in their first innings on Day 1 in the second Elite
Group B match at the Green Park Stadium here on Friday.
Opting to bowl on a green-top pitch after a delayed start, the pace
trio of Kaif, Suraj and Ishan shared nine wickets among them
to stun the home side in no time.
While Kaif and Ishan showed their class with the ball, on the other
hand, it was a memorable debut for the young Suraj.
Interestingly, the decision to prepare a green-top pitch eventually
backfired for the hosts.
In reply, Bengal in their first innings were 95/5 at stumps on the
opening day with a lead of 35 runs.
Sourav Paul (13), Sudip Kumar Gharami (0), Anustup Majumdar (12),
Manoj Tiwary (3) and Abishek Porel (12) all departed.
Shreyansh Ghosh (37 not out) and Karan Lal (8 not out) remained
unbeaten at the crease.
For UP, the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar bagged 5 for 25.
Although missing in-form Rinku Singh and Dhruv Jurel, UP looked a
strong batting unit but the home side’s batters found the going tough
against a young and quality Bengal pace attack.
In the 4th over of the day, Suraj cleaned up Aryan Juyal (11) while
Ishan struck twice in quick succession to send star batsmen Priyam
Garg (4) and skipper Nitish Rana (11) packing and leave UP in trouble
at 36/3.
Despite the early breakthroughs, Bengal did not hold back, rather
chipped in with wickets at regular intervals to put the home side in a
spot of bother at 49/5.
Next up, UP’s middle and lower order too surrendered as Kaif and Suraj
ran through the batting line-up in a matter of few overs.
Only 48.5 overs could be bowled on the day due to bad light...////...
