Bengal CM renames iconic Star theater as Binodini theater

Kolkata, Dec 31 (Reporter) As announced by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the century-old iconic Star Theatre was renamed Binodini Theatre on Tuesday as per a Kolkata Municipal Corporation notification. Banerjee on Monday announced at Sandeshkhali that the 141-year-old Star Theatre to be named after Bengali actress Binodini Dasi, popularly known as Noti Binodini, whose acting in Chaitannay Lila, directed by Girish Chandra Ghosh, had mesmerised mystic Sanyani Thakur Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Binodini Dasi, (1863–1941), started acting at the age of 12 and ended by the time she was 23, by that time she became the top actress of the Bengali theater in Kolkata. Sri Ramakrishna visited Star Theatre on Beadon Street to watch Chaitanyaleela directed by Girish Chandra Ghose, father of the Bengali stage on 21 September, 1884. Sri Ramakrishna went into a trance watching the drama blessed Binodini and said “Mother Be Conscious” (Ma tomar chaitanya hok). The Binodini Theatre in Hatibagan, North Kolkata, was built in 1883. Initially situated in Beadon Street, the theatre later moved to Cornwallis Street - now called Bidhan Sarani, It is a heritage site and was destroyed in a fire. Thereafter it was renovated and restored by the CMC under the active support of the then Mayor Subrata Mukherjee. The restored Star Theatre maintains the heritage facade; the interiors are contemporary. The property is maintained by a private company. At present, it is primarily a cinema hall; plays are staged on about two days per month.
