Bengal govt decides to accord ceremonial honour during Bhattacharjee's last journey

Kolkata, Aug 8 (Reporter) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday expressed profound shock at the demise of her predecessor and veteran Marxist leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, saying, "We have already taken a decision that we shall give him ( Bhattacharjee) full respect and ceremonial honour during his last journey and rites." Banerjee announced a holiday in the government offices to honour the former Chief Minister. Bhattacharjee, who held the CM post between 2000-2011, passed away at his south Kolkata flat around 8.20 AM. He was suffering from mild fever for the past few days. CM Banerjee also visited the home of Bhattacharjee at Palm Avenue, sources said. Politicians visited the flat of Bhattacharjee where Left Front chairman Biman Bose and people from all walks visited the bereaved family. Sources said the body would be taken to the Peace World tonight before it will be taken to CPI(M) headquarters at Alimuddin Street in the city on Friday morning. "Shocked and saddened by the sudden demise of the former Chief Minister Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, " Banerjee said. "I have known him for the last several decades, and visited him a few times when he was ill and effectively confined to home in the last few years. My very sincere condolences to Meeradi and Suchetan at this hour of grief. I communicate my condolences to the members of the CPI(M) party and all his followers. We have already taken a decision that we shall give him full respect and ceremonial honour during his last journey and rites," the CM said.
