Kolkata, Oct 21 (Reporter) West Bengal junior doctors in the state-owned hospitals on Monday night called off their fast unto death agitation and withdrew Tuesday's proposed strike after meeting state chief minister Mamata Banerjee, They had also received a request from the bereaved parents of a young post-graduate trainee medic, whose alleged rape-murder on August 9 at her workplae R G Kar Medical College and Hospital sparked the protest.Making the announcement, a junior doctor Debashish Haldar said: "We are calling off the indefinite fast after the parents of the murdered lady medic requested us to do so. They said they have already lost their daughter and do not want any more death," Haldar said.He also announced the withdrawal of the proposed strike on Tuesday in both government and private hospitals. But their protest and movement will continue, he added.Earlier the chief minister appealed to the medics to call off the strike and resume work. Eight junior medics, many of them women, were on fast since October 5 with their 10-point demands to eliminate the alleged existing threat culture, a central referral system for admission and vacancy of beds in the government hospitals. Haldar said their movement, now over 70-day old, would take the form of a mass protest and the common people have been urging them to at least call off the fast because most of the fasting doctors' health has already deteriorated. He said the bereaved parents appeared at the fasting place tonight and requested them to at least withdraw the fast. Dr Haldar said their movement for cleansing the system will continue. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee earlier in the day appealed to the protesting junior medics to withdraw the agitation and resume work after agreeing during a 2-hour meeting with representatives of West Bengal Junior Doctors Front at Nabanna that a safe and secure environment should exist in the government hospitals . The meeting was streamed live. The doctors, who raised several issues including the existing alleged threat culture, extortion, sexual harrasment and molestation, also urged the government to concede their demands as they needed to restore normalcy in the government hospitals. The 17 medics, who attended the meeting, later alleged they were not inform edabout the live streaming. "You did your protest as per your capacity. You did well. It is your democratic right. I also fasted and protested for 26 days. Not a single government officer came to meet me. I came to meet you. I ask for reports about your well-being every hour. "I ask you, you tell me what you want not once, but ten times if you want. You have a future, you have a duty. I urge you to lift the protests and fast as soon as possible," the CM told the medics. “You need to be free of threat culture. Just because I am in power, I threaten someone, or someone threatens someone because they are in power. This cannot happen. No one can threat anyone," she said. Banerjee said the government had spent Rs 450 crore for paying bills of Swastha Sathi card holders in the private hospitals for treatment since the protest started. On recruitment of doctors in the hospitals, the CM said she was aware that all the vacancies need to be filled immediately. "You have to consider that our hands are tied in many places, especially about reservations. We have tried regularly to get the matter up in the court, it is pending in the Supreme Court. You also have representation at the Supreme Court, I urge you to bring up this matter in court and ask them to speed up the process so we can fast track the recruitment," Banerjee told the doctors...////...
