Bengal : Junior doctors fast-unto-death enters 14th day

Kolkata, Oct 18 (Reporter) The fast-unto-death by the junior doctors in West Bengal, demanding justice for the deceased female post-graduate trainee doctor, entered the 14th day on Friday. There was no end in sight for calling off their hunger strike as both the authorities and protesting medics stood firm on their stance, sources said. The resident doctors have been on hunger strike since October 5. Over the past 13 days, six doctors have been hospitalised after their health deteriorated. Currently, eight medics remain on indefinite fast at the protest site in Esplanade in central Kolkata. The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front is spearheading movement since August 9 when the 31-year-old women second year post graduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at her working place in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in North Kolkata. The medics are demanding to concede the 10-point demands including removal of state health secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam, a central referral system for the patients and digital system about the vacancy of beds for all the hospitals to eliminate alleged corrupt practices and end of doctors-patients missunderstanding about the availability of beds. The medics also demanded formation of task forces to ensure essential provisions such as CCTV, on-call rooms, and washrooms at their workplaces. Meanwhile, seven senior doctors forums and junior doctors on Thursday evening held a virtual meeting to decide upon the future course of action. They will also hold a physical meeting on the subject today, a source said.
