Kolkata, Sep 17 (Reporter) West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday removed Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and appointed ADG (Law & Order) Manoj Kumar Verma as the new city top cop, a government release said. Goyal's removal as Kolkata police commissioner follows the state government's written assurance to a delegation of government hospitals junior doctors who had a five-hour long meeting with the chief minister and other top administrative functionaries on Monday. The meeting was held to end the deadlock over the junior medics' indefinite cease work since August 9 demanding justice in the alleged rape and murder of a lady doctor in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and its vandalism around August 14-15 midnight. Banerjee also removed Kolkata police Deputy Commissioner (North Division) Abhishek Gupta as demanded by the medics and posted him as the Commandar (EFR 2nd battalion). Dipak Sarkar ( DC East, Siliguri) has been posted as the new DC (North). Goyal has been transferred as ADG & IGP ( special task force) In the health secretariat, the government transferred Director of Medical Education Dr Kaustav Nayak as director of Institute of health & Family Welfare. Director of Health Services Debasish Haldar has been transferred as OSD, Public Health at the Swasthya Bhavan. The medics wanted these two officials to be removed from their posts.
