Bengal: Poll personnel preparing to conduct 1st phase of polling in 3 LS seats

Kolkata, Apr 18 (Reporter) Thousands of poll personnel on Thursday began to move carrying all necessary gadgets, including the EVMs, to their respective polling stations as West Bengal geared up to have its first of the seven-phase voting in three contiguous districts of Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri in the northern part of the state, official sources said. Meanwhile, the Central Armed Forces and state police personnel are already posted in all three Lok Sabha constituencies and began area domination to maintain the model code conduct. Over 4.6 million voters are expected to exercise their voting rights in around 5814 polling booths in which some 30 candidates are seeking their electoral fate in the hustings. Though the contest assumed to be multi-cornered, real fight is concentrated between state ruling Trinamool Congress and main opposition - the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Left Front and Congress are among other political parties, in the run-up, while majority of the candidates are Independents. The contest is expected between BJP candidate and union minister Nishith Pramanik and TMC's Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia in the Cooch Behar seat, in Alipurduar between Monoj Tigga (BJP) and TMC's Prakash Chik Baraik, and in Jalpaiguri between Jayanta Kumar Roy of BJP and Nirmal Chandra Roy from the ruling party. Congress fielded Riya Roy Chowdhury at Cooch Behar, Milli Oraon from RSP in Alipurduar, and Debraj Burman (CPI(M)) in Jalpaiguri. In 2019, the BJP won all three seats. However, this time it replaced Alipuduar sitting MP and fielded medic Monoj Tigga. Some 18,14,200 voters in Cooch Behar are expected to press button on the EVM in about 2043 booths, of the 196 are vulnerable, about 14,70,911 electors in Alipurduar to exercise their right at about 1867 polling stations, 159 are vulnerable, and 13,51,469 voters to vote in some 1904 booths, 391 have been identified as sensitive, sources added. About 254 companies of Central armed Forces and nearly 10,000 state police personnel have been deployed to man and assist the poll personnel to ensure free and peaceful voting, which starts at 7 AM on Friday. On Wednesday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) suggested West Bengal CV Ananda Bose not visit poll-bound Cooch Behar as his travelling to the northern district may invite violations of the Model Code of Conduct, which is already enforced, for the first phase of polling on April 19. Bose had planned to travel the sensitive border district during the polling day as the district had witnessed widespread violence in which four people were killed when armed Central forces opened fire to prevent looting of EVMs at Sitalkuchi...////...
