Bengal: Siliguri corridor is safe in the hands of SSB : Amit Shah

Siliguri (West Bengal), Dec 20 (Reporter) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the Siliguri corridor, an important commercial town of North Bengal and gateway to Northeast and Sikkim and surrounded by three International borders, is safe as the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is guarding the borders. Addressing the 61st Raising Day of SSB, Shah said there was no tension regarding the borders of Nepal and Bhutan since the SSB is guarding the 2450 kms porous and open borders with Nepal and Bhutan. Announcing that SSB has arrested about 4000 smugglers, traffickers, seized over 16000 kilos of narcotics this year, apart from stopping infiltration of unwanted elements into Indian territory. Shah visited some border areas to see the security situation along the India-Bangladesh border near Ranidanga. He said when borders are open and porous the forces’ responsibility increases more. The Home Minister said Siliguri is a strategically very vital link as it connects the north-east and landlocked Sikkim. Sikkim has also border with China, Nepal. Shah aid the SSB has a major role to tame the left-wing extremism in the region of Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
