Patna, Sep 29 (Reporter) Following heavy downpour in Nepal, several rivers including Kosi and Gandak were flowing above the danger mark, making the flood situation grim in North Bihar, where NDRF has been pressed into service to tackle the situation.
Union minister of state for Home, Nityanand Rai, told newsperson here on Sunday that the NDRF and SDRF teams were actively working in the flood affected areas and were providing all possible relief work to the victims, the senior officers of the teams were continuously monitoring the situation.
Rai said that 11 teams have been sent in the affected areas, whereas eight teams have been put on alert and were on standby.
Apart from NDRF teams, medical teams were also providing treatment to the people in the affected areas, he informed.
The Union minister said that the state government was actively tackling the situation and added that to handle the flood menace, the Centre for the first time has sanctioned Rs 11,500 crore to Bihar.
Meanwhile, Bihar Water Resources department additional secretary Naveen said that the discharge was maximum in the rivers originating from Nepal namely Gandak, Kosi, Mahananda, Bagmati and others due to the incessant rain in Nepal.
Giving a detailed information, he said that 5.62 lakh cusecs water was discharged from Gandak barrage in Valmiki Nagar on Saturday.
Following mounting pressure of water in River Gandak, Champaran embankment in Bagha I block of
Champaran district was damaged at 1700 hours, which was being repaired on war footing.
He said that the concerned Executive Engineer (flood control division) Baga, Nishikant Kumar, has been suspended for dereliction in his duty and for not working in tandem with the district administration that caused the damage.
He further said that 6.61 lakh cusecs water was discharged from Kosi Barrage at Virpur, following which the flood water started flowing over the Kosi Barrage. All 56 gates of the barrage were opened on Saturday.
Because of the heavy discharge of water, commuting on the barrage has been prohibited as a preventive measure, he said and informed that security steps have been initiated at western embankment of River Kosi.
Following the huge pressure of the water in River Bhagmati, its embankment in Nepal was damaged on Saturday, following which the water level in the river in Sitamarhi of Bihar increased on Sunday.
Following the unprecedented rise in the water level of Bagmati river, security steps were initiated at Belsand, Parsauni Barganiya and Rasalpur block of Sitamarhi and Piprahi, Puranhiya and Sheohar block of the district.
Due to the mounting pressure of water in Bagmati, the right embankment of the river got damaged in about 35 metre length in Madhukaul village under Belsand block of Sitamarhi district. The embankment was being repaired on war footing.
He said that Kamla Balan was flowing 2.10 metres above its danger level at Jhanjharpur gauge. Lalbagiya river was flowing 1.55 metres above the red mark at Govbadiya gauge spot.
Mahananda river was flowing 0.81 metres and 1.57 metres above the danger level at Shajapur and Digraghat gauge, respectively.
He said that the engineers and other senior officers were camping at all sensitive and most sensitive places, while seven junior engineers and two assistant engineers have been deployed for better monitoring of such spots.
Keeping in mind the disaster, a "War Room" was set up, which would function till the next 72 hours round-the-clock.
Apart from this, the district administrations have already been allotted and instructed to initiate required steps to tackle the situation and for rescue and relief of the affected people.
Several districts of North Bihar were facing flood menace as 13 rivers, namely Gandak, Kosi, Ganga, Bagmati, Budhi Gandak, Kamla balan, Kahaniya, Adhwara group of rivers Mahananda, Ghagra, Lakhanei, Parman and Kankai were flowing above the danger level.
According to sources in the Disaster Management department, more than two lakh people were affected by the floods.
A report from Darbhanga, quoting district magistrate Rajiv Roshan, said that water of River Kosi was overflowing from its embankment near Kiratpur Chowk and Narkatia Chowk one km away from Jamalpur police station area in Darbhanga district.
The district magistrate who was personally monitoring the situation was camping at the spot along with senior officers and public representatives to tackle the situation.
Meanwhile, 58 schools of flood-affected eight blocks in West Champaran district have been closed till October two as preventive measures.
Following the flood and heavy downpour, the flood water was flowing over the railway tracks in Araria and Jogbani due to which plying of trains were suspended on Katihar Jogbani and Darbhanga Saharsa Jogbani route. All trains leading towards Jogbani have been cancelled.
Meanwhile, the leaves of engineers of Water Resources department have been cancelled in view of the flood situation...////...
