Bhubaneswar, July 31 (Reporter) In a significant political development, BJD MP Mamata Mohanta on Wednesday tendered her resignation from the membership of Rajya Sabha and also from the primary membership of the party.
In a letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman, the BJD MP, who was elected to the Upper house in 2020 said, she tendered her resignation from the membership of Rajya Sabha today.
Mamata Mohanta said she had taken the decision consciously.
She said, “ I express my gratitude to you for the opportunities given to me to raise issues of public importance in the house.
In another letter to BJD President Naveen Patnaik, Mamata Mohanta communicated her decision to resign from the primary membership of the party from July 31, 2024.
She said “ I sincerely express my gratitude to you for giving me an opportunity to serve the people of Mayurbhanj and also take the cause of Odisha at the national level".
Mamata further said “However, I feel that there is no requirement of the services of myself as well as my community in the Biju Janata Dal and therefore I had taken this hard decision in public interest".
The BJD leader from tribal dominated Mayurbhanj district requested Naveen Patnaik to accept her resignation from the primary membership of the party.
In her face book posting, Mamata Mohanta said "BJD president Naveen Patnaik had given her the opportunity to serve Mayurbhanj district and the state by selecting her as a member of the District Council and a member of Rajya Sabha" .
She said that “The group is not feeling the need of my service today. Since I am a leader of the people and their service is my main focus I did not feel the need to be in that party. That is why I resigned from the Primary membership of the Biju Janata Dal and Rajya Sabha member post.”
Out of the total 10 Rajya Sabha seats from Odisha , the BJD has nine members while the BJP has one member held by Railway Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw who was elected to the Upper house with the support of Biju Janata Dal...////...
