Kolkata, Feb 29 (Reporter) West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, following a court order, left for Sandeshkhali on Thursday in North 24 Parganas district to meet the local villagers, especially the women who had been allegedly sexually harassed and dispossessed of their land by some ruling Trinamool Congress leaders, including Shahjahan Sheikh.
Meanwhile, Shahjahan has been arrested by the West Bengal police from Minakhan and sent to 10-day police custody after being produced before the Basirhat District and Sessions court on Thursday morning.
A report from Sandeshkhali said the women in the region celebrated the arrest of Shahjahan by distributing sweets, bursting crackers and ululating to invoke the good omen. They also raised the slogan "Bharat Mata Ki Jay".
West Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose said, "Good things have happened," while reacting to the arrest of the TMC leader.
Adhikari was seen proceeding towards Rampur Ghat to catch a boat on the way to his destination.
The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted permission to Adhikari and another BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh to visit Jeliakhali and Halderpara on Thursday.
Calcutta High Court single bench judge Kaushik Chanda said this following a prayer from Adhikari's lawyers.
The court asked Adhikari to ensure law and order was maintained in the areas where prohibitory orders were in force and desist from delivering provocative speeches there, and report to the local police station.
Adhikari visited Sandeshkhali on February 20 following a Calcutta High Court order, and there he assured the people he would come and meet them again.
Adhikari on the way told reporters that the will of the people was supreme in democracy.
He was reacting to the arrest of the TMC leader.
He also announced that the BJP would hold a big rally at Jeliakhali on March 10.
TMC spokesman Kunal Ghosh said after clearance from the Calcutta High Court, the state police arrested Sahjahan and maintained "Rajdharma".
CPI (M) leader Sujan Chakraborty wondered whether it was an arrest or only a show of arrest as the TMC leader is in the safe custody of the state police...////...
