Bombay HC dismisses election petition against Mumbai Cong chief

Mumbai, Feb 5 (Reporter) The Bombay High Court on Wednesday dismissed an election petition challenging the victory of Mumbai Congress president and Member of Parliament (MP) Varsha Gaikwad from the Mumbai North-Central constituency in the Lok Sabha elections. The petition was filed by a candidate Asif Siddiqui, who had challenged Gaikwad’s victory alleging electoral malpractices and procedural violations in the Congress leader’s poll campaign. Siddiqui who had contested from the same constituency had alleged that Gaikwad’s campaign handbills did not comply with mandatory printing norms. He further alleged that money was distributed to voters in exchange for votes. Opposing the plea Gaikwad’s advocate, Tejas Deshmukh, stated that the same was not supported by material evidence and it did not elaborate on the nature of alleged false promises made in her campaign. Moreover, Deshmukh submitted that Siddiqui had failed to submit any videos to support his claim of bribery.
