Bengaluru/Kalaburagi, Feb 2 (Reporter) Senior Congress MLA BR Patil has resigned from his position as the political adviser to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, triggering fresh turmoil within the party ranks.
Patil, a seasoned politician and known loyalist of Siddaramaiah, submitted his resignation citing no specific reasons but affirmed his commitment to continue serving as an MLA.
"I have resigned from the position of CM's political adviser. My resignation has already been submitted to the Chief Minister. However, I will continue to serve as an MLA and do not require any official post," Patil told reporters.
His decision comes at a time when discontent is brewing within the Congress over leadership issues and the allocation of ministerial positions.
Reacting to the development, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge said, "I am not sure why he has resigned. He is a very close associate of both Kharge Sahab and CM Siddaramaiah. So, I am sure that he has reasons for whatever it is. I am not aware of it completely. Neither I nor CM Siddaramaiah has seen the letter. So, I request the media that until the letter is out, let's not try to cook our own stories."
Patil, who has been a legislator since 1983, has been vocal on several contentious issues, including the government's policy on liquor shop licences. His resignation is being seen as a reflection of broader dissatisfaction among senior party leaders who were overlooked for ministerial roles after the Congress formed the government in May 2023.
Political analysts believe Patil's move could intensify factionalism within the Karnataka Congress, as multiple leaders are pushing for a leadership overhaul ahead of the upcoming state budget session. The resignation has also fueled speculation over whether Siddaramaiah will undertake a cabinet reshuffle to address the concerns of disgruntled MLAs.
The Congress high command is yet to respond to the development, but party insiders suggest that efforts may be made to placate Patil and prevent further dissent within the party...////...
