Chennai, July 6 (Reporter) Several cadres of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) were arrested when they staged a road roko in front of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) opposite to Chennai Central Railway Station demanding a CBI probe into the killing of Party Tamil Nadu Unit
President K Armstrong by an eight-member gang at Sembium in Perambur in North Chennai last night.
After he was declared brought dead at the Apollo Hospital, his body was shifted to RGGGH for autopsy late last night.
The post mortem was performed on Saturday.
Several BSP cadres, who had gathered outside the RGGGH since last night, staged a protest demonstration in front of the hospital today demanding the arrest of real culprits and a CBI probe into the killing.
A large posse of police personnel were deployed in front of the hospital as unrelenting BSP cadres blocked traffic on the arterial road for close to two hours to press their demand. They also refused to take over the body.
They shouted slogans denouncing the killing and demanded a CBI probe, besides the resignation of Chief Minister M K Stalin, who holds the Home portfolio.
They angry protestors, carrying party flags, also tried to break the police barricades and tried to enter the hospital. However, they were thwarted by the police, leading to jostling and tension.
BSP State Secretary Parthiban said if the real culprits were not arrested, the party would intensify its protest across the State.
Senior police officials, including Additional Commissioner Asra Garg held talks with the protestors. As they failed to heed to their request and refused to disperse, police arrested them and took them in police vehicles.
Traffic on the arterial road was hit for a few hours, leading to massive pile up of vehicles.
Though who came to the city by train at the Central Railway station could not reach their destination because of traffic snarls.
Police have formed ten special teams to probe the case and have arrested eight suspects in connection with the killing, which preliminary inquiry reveal was a sequel to the killing of one
'Arcot' Suresh at Pattinapakkam in the city in August 2018.
Those arrested included the brother of Suresh.
A large posse of Police personnel were deployed at Perambur and near his house at Villivakkam, where he was residing. Armstrong used to frequently visit Sembium to inspect the progress of the construction of his house.
He had demolished his old house and was constructing a new premises. He was talking to a few friends in front of the under-construction house, when the gang, which came in two-wheelers, brutally attacked them sickles and knives. He was declared brought dead at the hospital.
Reports said the gang was monitoring his movement for the last couple of weeks and ascertained that Armstrong was not carrying his licensed pistol, which he had surrendered with the police in view of Model Code of Conduct for the Elections.
Meanwhile, Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Sandeep Rai Rathore told reporters that there was no political motive into the killing.
Categorically ruling out any political angle into the incident, though Armstrong was the State Unit Chief of BSP, he said special teams were probing the case and the real reason could be known only after the investigation is completed.
On reports that Armstrong was facing threat to his live, Mr Rathore said as per police records there was no official information or complaint about this.
The killing was being thoroughly probed, he added.
Meanwhile, BSP Supremo and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati appealed to the party cadres to maintain peace and clam and said she is planning to visit Chennai tomorrow to pay tributes to the slain leader.
In a post on X, she said "considering the serious of this extremely sad and worrying incident, I am planning to go to Chennai tomorrow to pay my tributes to Armstrong and meet his family and console them".
"I appeal to all to maintain peace and order", she said.
Leaders cutting across political lines, condoled the killing of Armstrong and urged the State government to take action against the culprits...////...
