Chamrajnagar, March 12 (Reporter) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday criticized the recent move by the Narendra Modi government to notify the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), labeling it as "electorally motivated."
Expressing his opposition to granting citizenship based on religion, Siddaramaiah questioned the timing of the Modi government's actions, noting their silence on the CAA until the approach of the Lok Sabha elections.
He made these comments while speaking to reporters after paying his respects to late Congress leader R Dhruvanarayan on his first death anniversary here.
Regarding the release of water to Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister adamantly refuted the BJP's accusation, labeling it as "lies."
He also categorically ruled out any possibility of releasing even a minuscule amount of water to Tamil Nadu due to Karnataka's dire lack of water resources.
Furthermore, Siddaramaiah asserted that there had been no formal request from Tamil Nadu for water and declared that Karnataka would stand firm on its decision not to release water, regardless of any potential appeals from the neighbouring state or directives from the central government.
"We will not release water even if Tamil Nadu asks us or the Centre directs us," he said.
Expressing deep skepticism and suspicion towards the BJP's intentions to change the Indian Constitution, he said that BJP MP Ananthkumar Hegde's statements aren't just personal opinions but reflect the stance of the saffron party as a whole.
The CM also questioned whether such a statement could have been made without the backing or approval of the party's higher echelons. "He is a five-time MP and a former Union Minister. Will he say such a thing if it was not a party decision?" Siddaramaiah asked.
He further criticized the BJP by alleging that the party has never truly trusted the Constitution since its inception.
Siddaramaiah also accused the BJP of favouring the ancient Hindu legal text, the "Manu Smriti," over the modern constitutional framework...////...
