Mumbai, May 15 (Reporter) The din and bustle of election campaigning is gradually reaching a crescendo across the remaining 13 Maharashtra constituencies including those in this financial capital and the adjacent districts slated to vote in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20.
So far, 35 out of the 48 seats in the state have gone to the hustings.
Apart from the half a dozen seats in the western metropolis - Mumbai South, Mumbai North, Mumbai North West, Mumbai North East, Mumbai North Central and Mumbai South Central – the poll caravan will also move to Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Phalghar, Nashik, Dindori and Dhule Monday next.
Altogether 264 candidates are in the fray for the 13 constituencies Including union ministers Piyush Goel (BJP-Mumbai North), Bharti Pawar (BJP-Dindori) and Kapil Patil (BJP, Bhiwandi), former union minister Dr Subhash Bhamre (BJP-Dhule), Arvind Sawant (UBT-Mumbai South), Anil Desai (UBT- Mumbai South Central), Varsha Gaikwad (Congress-Mumbai North Central), Rajan Vichare (UBT-Thane), Ravindra Vaikar (Shinde Sena-Mumbai North West). Prominent lawyer Ujwal Nikam (BJP-Mumbai North Central) and Shobha Bachav (Congress -Dhule).
With the campaigning picking up, allegations and counter-allegations are flying thick and fast between the main contenders Mahayuti (Grand Alliance comprising BJP, Shinde Sena and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP group – all part of the NDA bloc) and Maha Vikas Agadhi (comprising Congress, Uddhav Thackeray led UBT and the Sharad Pawar-headed NCP-SCP – all part of the INDIA bloc).
Prakash Ambedkar’s Vanchit Bahujan Agadhi and the AIMIM, as well as some of the smaller parties, have put up candidates in some of the constituencies.
With only three days left for the campaigning to end on May 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is addressing election meetings in Pimpalgao and Kalyan, besides holding a road show in the evening in the Ghatkopar area of suburban Mumbai Suburban in support of the Mahayuti candidates.
On May 17, Modi will address a rally with top Mahayuti leaders including Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawa in Mumbai .
On the other hand, UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray is busy campaigning in various areas in Mumbai and its suburbs in support of MVA aspirants. On Wednesday evening, Thackeray is slated to address a meeting in the Nashik constituency in support of his party nominee Rajabhau Waje.
The grand old man of Maharashtra politics and NCP-SCP chief Sharad Pawar is also attending an election rally in Wani of Dindori constituency in support of his party nominee Bhaskar Bhagare.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his Deputy Devendra Fadnavis have also lined up meetings in several constituencies.
Among other prominent leaders, MNS Chief Raj Thackeray, NCP-SCP leader Jayant Patil, MPCC president Nana Patole, UBT leader Aditya Thackeray, VBA chief Prakash Ambedkar are among the other star campaigners.
