Hyderabad, Nov 5 (Reporter) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has stated that Telangana’s caste census will set an example for the entire country. Speaking at a conference with intellectuals and the BC (Backward Classes) community on the caste census, held at the Gandhi Ideology Centre in Bowenpally on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi highlighted that caste discrimination perpetuates inequality and asserted that a caste census would help bring justice to all communities, especially those marginalized for generations. He expressed confidence that a caste-based census would ensure fair representation and reveal the socio-economic disparities affecting Dalits, OBCs, and women. “Let us acknowledge the existence of caste discrimination and inequality in the country,” Rahul said. “Some accuse me of dividing the country by addressing these issues, but telling the truth does not divide a nation. A caste census will clarify the socio-economic realities of Dalits, OBCs, and women and help identify who holds financial resources. I made a clear commitment in Parliament that we will conduct a caste census and remove the reservation cap,” he added. The conference included discussions from intellectuals and professors on caste-related issues, with Rahul Gandhi personally taking notes on their suggestions. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also addressed the gathering, calling the social, economic, political, educational, and employment-based caste enumeration survey a government responsibility. "It’s courageous of Rahul Gandhi to take on this challenge for social equality," he said, adding that Rahul’s commitment is demonstrated not just in words but through action. Revanth Reddy reiterated the state's commitment to fulfill Rahul’s promise by conducting the caste census and ensuring fair reservations for BCs once completed. He cited the recent Group 1 examination results as proof of the government’s commitment to inclusivity, noting that of the 31,383 candidates selected for Mains, 9.8 per cent were OCs, 8.8 per cent EWS, 57.1 per cent OBCs, 15.3 per cent SCs, and 8.8 per cent STs. "We are committed to delivering on Rahul Gandhi’s promise of a caste census and securing fair reservations," he added, announcing a resolution to incorporate the caste census in the upcoming 2025 census. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, also present at the event, stated that during Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, he observed the need for equitable distribution of the nation’s resources. Inspired by this realization, the Telangana Congress has committed to implementing a caste census if elected. A unanimous resolution on caste enumeration was already passed in the Legislative Assembly, and the Planning Department has taken steps to formalize it. In preparation for the start of the caste census on Wednesday, the Telangana government has announced half-day sessions for primary schools.
