Bengaluru, Feb 6 (Reporter) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested Puran Bahadur Rai, an accused in the murder case of former Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) president Madan Tamang, from Bengaluru Rural.
Rai had been evading the law since 2017 and had shifted his base from Darjeeling to Bengaluru to avoid arrest, officials said.
The case, pertaining to the killing of Tamang on May 21, 2010, in Darjeeling, was taken over by the CBI on January 19, 2011, following notifications issued by the West Bengal government and the Centre. The agency re-registered the case after taking over the FIR initially lodged at Sadar Police Station, Darjeeling.
Rai, a charge-sheeted accused, had been absconding from trial proceedings since 2017. The Chief Judge of the City Sessions Court, Kolkata, had issued a proclamation against him on April 3, 2017, but he failed to appear. Subsequently, an open-ended warrant was issued against him on November 20, 2024.
Acting on technical inputs and sustained efforts, the CBI tracked down and arrested Rai. He will be produced before the competent court, officials added...////...
