CBI moves Cal HC seeking death penalty for convict Sanjay Roy in medic rape-murder case

Kolkata, Jan 24 (Reporter) The CBI on Friday filed an appeal in the Calcutta High Court praying for death penalty for convict and Civic Volunteer Sanjay Roy, who had been awarded life sentence by a sessions court here on Monday in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Trainee doctor rape and murder case, court sources said. The Central Bureau of Investigation's latest move happened after it objected to the West Bengal government's Tuesday's petition, which also sought capital punishment for Roy after the sessions court of Sealdah found the Civic Volunteer guilty of murder and handed him life imprisonment. The matter was presented before the double bench headed by Justice Debangshu Basak, by CBI advocate Rajdeep Majumdar. He said that the agency had completed the e-filing of the matter on Friday and is expected the same to come up on Monday, the sources added. Earlier, Sessions Court Judge Justice Anirban Das also ordered the West Bengal government to pay ₹17 lakh compensation to the victim's family. A 31-year-old woman resident doctor was found brutally raped and murdered on August 9 morning at her working place RG Kar Hospital's 3rd floor where she went to rest after 36 hours duty. Though there were widespraed belief that the 2nd year post graduate lady medic was raped and murdered by more than one person, but Sanjay Roy emerged as the sole offender in the crime after getting available evidence and 50 witnesses appeared in the case, which was held in camera...////...
