Wayanad, Aug 1 (Reporter) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday demanded that the Wayanad landslide be declared a 'national tragedy" by the Union Government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have already been briefed about the pathetic situation in the landslide-hit area, the chief minister said.
The main concern is to rescue the individuals who are stranded due to the disaster, he said.
The rescue operations are continuing with the coordinated efforts of various forces, including the Army, NDRF, Fire brigade, Police, and voluntary organisations.
Talking to newspersons after anall-party meeting at the collectorate here, the chief minister said the Army engaged in the rescue operation has successfully evacuated all the affected people from the site.
"Army authorities have confirmed that no one remains stranded alive in the landslide-affected region," he said. The rescue workers faced many challenges due to the poor weather, rain, deposits of mud, and uprooted trees at the accident site.
He said the government is currently focusing on taking all the affected people to the temporary relief camps, and later they will be rehabilitated accordingly. With the completion of the Ailey Bridge connecting Choorimala and Mundakkai being built by the Army, the required equipment and machinery for rescue operations can be transported to disaster-affected areas.
"Those who survived the disaster have been temporarily accommodated in the relief camps, and the camps will continue for the time being. The process of rehabilitating the disaster-affected victims will be implemented effectively later," Vijayan said.
He said steps would be taken to reproduce or reissue the certificates and documents to those who have lost them in the disaster, and it would also ne ensured that the education department and local bodies make special arrangements so that students can continue their education.
Counselling will be provided to the affected children by the Health Department and other agencies. The tribal families will be shifted to safer places, and for those unwilling to shift, and the government will provide food and other necessary items.
Measures will be taken to prevent the occurrence and spread of infectious diseases in the area. He also said the people who are carrying on false campaigns against the government's relief works should not be encouraged. A subcommittee of the State Cabinet comprising ministers of revenue, forest, public works, tourism, and schedule caste will coordinate the work from Wayanad.
