Cong leader EVKS Elangovan cremated with full state honours

Chennai, Dec 15 (Reporter) Senior Congress leader and Erode East Legislator EVKS Elangovan, who died yesterday, was cremated with full state honours on Sunday evening. Mr Elangovan, who is also a former Union Minister and former TNCC President, was admitted to a private hospital on November 13 for respiratory and cardiac problems and died yesterday despite best of treatment, a hospital bulletin said. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, DMK Ministers, Congress leaders, including TNCC President K Selvaperunthagai and leaders of various political parties paid their last respects to the mortal remains of Mr Elangovan for the second time today. Meanwhile, the State government announced that his last rites would be held with full state honours. His body, which was earlier brought to TNCC Office for the public and Congress functionaries to pay their last respects, was taken in procession and cremated with full state honours as per the orders of the government, with a 21 gun salute and the bugle sounding the last post. The former MP of the Congress party, who is also the grandson of social reformer and Rationalist leader Periyar E V Ramasamy, had lost his son Thiru Mahan E.Ve.Raa, who died last year. Thiru Mahan had successfully made his electoral debut from Erode East Assembly segment and won the 2021 polls on Congress ticket and as an ally of the DMK. As his death necessitated the bye-election, the DMK allotted the seat to the Congress since it was held by it and Mr Elangovan was given the ticket. He contested the bypoll, won it by a big margin and became a Legislator after a gap of 20 years. Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, Mr Stalin and leaders of various parties, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, AICC President Mallikharjuna Kharge condoled the death of Mr Elangovan. From the hospital, Mr Elangovan's body, after embalming, was taken to his residence at Manapakkam yesterday where it was kept for public homage. From his residence, it was taken to TNCC Headquarters Sathyamoorthy Bhavan today morning to enable the public and Congress functionaries and cadres to pay their last respects after which it was taken in a procession to the crematorium where Mr Elangovan's mortal remains were cremated with full state honours...////...
