Agartala, Feb 13 (Reporter) West Tripura District and Session judge sent retired Additional Director of Tripura’s Industries and Commerce Kaizar Debbarma (61) to three days of police custody for allegedly cheating Noida-based World Education Mission (WEM) in the name of providing land for WEM institute here.
Police said Debbarma was picked up from his house in the city on Wednesday early hours by West Agartala Police Station. At night, the court allowed police to interrogate him in their custody for three days in connection with the two-year land scam case. Four of the five accused have been arrested earlier in connection with the case.
WEM Director Himangshu Panchal filed an FIR in July 2023 against five persons including Kaizar Debbarma for illegally handing over a piece of land measuring 48.52 acres in West Tripura’s Bodhjungnagar industrial estate by submitting fake documents and taking Rs 1.25 Cr. During mutation, it appeared that some other individuals owned the entire land plots, and the accused persons forged the documents.
During interrogation, police traced the transaction of Rs 1.25 Crore to the accounts of the five accused by the Director of WEM. However, no money trail was found in Kaizar's accounts, the official said, adding that the investigating officer suspects that Kaizar played an active role from behind.
According to police, Kaizar met Panchal three years ago in Delhi and introduced the five accused to the educational institution. Before retirement, he was an influential officer in the Industries and Commerce department and promised to manage the institute's land.
“After finalisation of the deal, Kaizar provided him with a land deed based on which the money was credited to the accounts. Later, when Panchal proceeded for land mutation, the deed was found forged and land owners were unaware of the sale. Thereafter, he lodged a complaint and police arrested four and all of them are in jail now,” police stated.
Several private universities and institutions reached Tripura after the BJP-led government announced plans to make the state a hub of education and tourism.
Taking advantage of the state’s offer, many of them started activities without minimum infrastructure with the help of some local agents close to the BJP party and grabbed the Central government’s investment subsidy of up to 50 percent, which all have been brought under investigation, police added...////...
