Belagavi, Dec 26 (Reporter) The Congress Working Committee (CWC) met here on Thursday, passing a series of resolutions to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s historic presidency of the Indian National Congress a century ago, while addressing what it termed as the "gravest threats" to India’s Constitution and democracy.
The meeting, held against the backdrop of the nation’s 75th anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption, focused on a range of critical issues impacting the nation’s future.
In a significant resolution, the CWC demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and an apology to the nation following his recent comments denigrating Dr BR Ambedkar. The committee reaffirmed its commitment to defending the Constitution, emphasising that any attempt to undermine its founding principles would be met with strong opposition.
The CWC also passed resolutions condemning the growing politicisation of India’s institutions, including the judiciary, the Election Commission, and the media.
It criticised the ruling BJP government for obstructing parliamentary proceedings and for its recent amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules, which restrict public access to vital electoral documents. These amendments, the CWC argued, threaten the transparency and integrity of India’s elections.
Other resolutions focused on addressing the ongoing economic slowdown, rising inflation, and the neglect of agriculture and rural employment. The CWC called for immediate reforms to support the poor and middle class, including income support, tax relief, and a fairer Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. It also demanded legal guarantees for Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for farmers and enhanced funding for MGNREGA.
The CWC reiterated its demand for a full discussion in Parliament on the situation in Ladakh and stressed the importance of national unity in dealing with territorial security concerns. It also expressed concern over the rising attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh and called on the Indian government to work with Bangladesh’s interim government to ensure their safety.
The meeting culminated in the announcement of the "Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan Abhiyan," a nationwide movement to defend the Constitution, which will begin with a rally in Belagavi on December 27, 2024, and continue through January 26, 2025.
Additionally, the CWC revealed plans for the Samvidhan Bachao Rashtriya Padayatra in 2025, a massive, nationwide public outreach campaign...////...
