Cyclone Dana affects over 3.5 million people in Odisha: Pujari

Bhubaneswar, Oct 27 (Reporter) Over 3.5 million people across 108 blocks and 1,671 panchayats in 14 districts of Odisha were affected by the severe cyclone Dana, which made landfall on October 25, according to State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari. Speaking to the press here on Sunday, Pujari said that 426 wards across 31 municipal bodies were also impacted by the cyclone. The state government had evacuated 810,896 people to safer locations prior to the cyclone’s landfall. The evacuated individuals were housed in 8,334 cyclone shelters throughout the state, where they received both dry and cooked food. According to the Minister, approximately 125,091 homes were either fully or partially damaged, and 755 families were provided with polythene sheets as temporary shelter. The district administrations, he said, have been instructed to submit detailed reports on the cyclone-related damages to the Special Relief Commissioner’s office by November 2. Official sources mentioned that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas on Sunday. Preliminary reports indicate that 14 districts were impacted by Cyclone Dana, which made landfall between Bhitarkanika in Kendrapara district and Dhamara in Bhadrak district on the morning of October 25, with wind speeds ranging from 100 to 120 km/hr. However, four districts—Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Kendrapara—were reported to be the worst hit. Pujari said the state government will soon submit a detailed damage report to the central government. A central team is also expected to visit the state to assess the cyclone’s impact, he added. The Odisha government reported zero casualties during the cyclone. However, 28 people, including a doctor, were treated for snake bites, and all are reported to be out of danger...////...
