Cyclone Fengal : 3 die of electrocution in Chennai

Chennai, Nov 30 (Reporter) As heavy rains battered Chennai city and other districts three people died of electrocution in Cyclonic Storm Fengal related incidents in the city on Saturday. Talking to reporters after reviewing the Cyclone situation, Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran told reporters tonight that three peope have died of electrocution in Chennai city. He said Chief Minister M K Stalin would announce adequate relief to their families. Elaborating on the steps taken by the ruling DMK, he said though heavy rains battered the city, which recorded close to 10 cm of rain till 2000 hrs, he said the Cyclone, which has started crossing the coast, has not caused any major damages. He attributed this to the preventive measures put in place by the Chief Minister. He said Marakkanam in Villupuram district--close to Puducherry--where the Cyclone made the landfall recorded rains in excess of 20 cms and also in neighbouring Athur in Chengalpattu district. He said in the city, more than 4,000 people, evacuated from low lying areas were housed in over 120 camps and nearly three lakh food packets were distributed to the people. Food packets will be distributed tomorrow also as the Met office has forecast moderate rains, and it will continue till the rain subsided completely. Orders to this effect were issued by the Chief Minister, he added. Mr Ramachandran said rains have now abated, as the Cyclone started making a land fall and all the district administrations were directed to engage in relief and rehabilitation measures. He said a complete picture would be known by tonight after the Cyclone entirely crossed the coast and the details would be shared tomorrow. Meanwhile, Mr Stalin announced a relief of Rs five lakh to the family of one of the electrocution victims, Sakthivel (47) of Velacherry on behalf of the Electricity department. Sakthivel died after he came into contact with a live wire that got snapped due to gusty winds, Mr Stalin, while expressing deep anguish and grief over his death and offered his deepest condolences to the bereaved family members...////...
