Chennai, Nov 30 (Reporter) The Cyclone Fengal over the Bay of Bengal on Saturday entered the land
and started crossing the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast, Met office said this evening.
It started making the landfall at 1730 hrs and is crossing the coast at a speed of 7 kmph, it said in
an update.
In a Red Alert message, Met office said the Cyclonic Storm Fengal (pronounced as FEINJAL] over
Southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-southwestwards with a speed of 7 kmph during the past
six hours and lay centred at 1730 hours today, over the southwest Bay of Bengal off North Tamil
Nadu coast about 40 km away from the coast, 50 km south-southeast of Mahabalipuram,
60 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 90 km south of Chennai.
Latest observations indicate that the forward sector of spiral bands associated with the Cyclone
has entered into the land.
It is likely to move west-southwestwards and cross the North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts
between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind
speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during next 3 to 4 hours.
Met office sources said it will take three to four hours to cross the coast and when its Centre
portion started crossing, gusty winds with speed upto 90 km per hour will prevail.
The system is being continuously monitored by the Doppler Weather Radar at Chennai.
Meanwhile, rains abated in Chennai for the last few hours, though gusty winds prevailed.
The sources said moderate rain is likely over Chennai and its suburbs for the next three
hours till 2200 hrs.
However, ten districts are expected to receive intense rains till tonight. Moderate to intense
spells of rain will occur over Chengalpattu, Kanchipra, Dharmapuri, Tiruvannamalai,
Kallakurichi, Villuppuram and Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
It also said moderate rate will occur at isolated place over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Krishnagiri, Tiruchirapalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Salem and Namakkal districts and
light rains over Erode and Karur districts of Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, Met office has forecast heavy rains in Coimbatore and its nearby districts for
the next three days from tomorrow...////...
