Cyclone Remal aftermath: Meghalaya Min reviews situation

Shillong, May 31 (Reporter) Meghalaya Minister for Revenue & Disaster Management, Kyrmen Shylla, on Friday took stock of the after-effect of cyclone Remal across the state, where five deaths were reported due to landslides and more than 5,000 people were affected. “Discussions centred on the extensive damages caused by the cyclone, including landslides and heavy rainfall that severely affected all districts of Meghalaya,” an official statement said. The meeting was attended by Commissioner and Secretary, Sanjay Goyal, Secretary Revenue and Disaster Management department, Matsiewdor War Nongbri and other government officials from the State Disaster Management Authority. The meeting also addressed the extent of the losses due to house damage, road and communication disruption, flooding incurred by the public due to the disaster. “The specific areas and infrastructure that suffered significant damage, the immediate and ongoing relief efforts being conducted were also discussed,” the official statement said. The meeting underscored the actions taken by various responders including SDMA, SDRF, deputy commissioners, the three line departments, the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited. “These agencies have been instrumental in the relief process, providing timely assistance to those affected and working tirelessly to restore normalcy in the disaster-stricken areas,” the official said. During the meeting, the minister was also apprised of the preparedness measures, actions taken by State Emergency Operations Center, district authorities, using Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) in dissemination of warnings/alerts, Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) all warning apps of central government. The minister emphasised the need for continued vigilance and preparedness to mitigate the impacts of such disaster in the future. Meanwhile, the bodies of all the four persons, who died due to landslide-triggered house collapse in Shella area in the East Khasi Hills district early Thursday were retrieved on Friday. On the other hand, rainfall subsided across the state on Friday and life was back to near normal with supplies of water and electricity being restored to a large extent...////...
