Death toll in Madurai women hostel fire incident rises to three in TN

Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Sep 17 (Reporter) The death toll in the fire incident at a working women’s hostel in Katrapalayam locality in Madurai city, rose to three with one more woman succumbing to burn injuries on Tuesday. Police said J.Pushpa (65), warden of the Visaka Women’s Hostel, who suffered 45 percent burns in the fire accident on Thursday last and undergoing treatment in a private hospital, died without responding to treatment. S.Parimala Soundari (52), a government school teacher and B.Saranya (32), working as a teacher in a private Institute of Hotel Management were suffocated to death, while three others including the hostel warden Pushpa, M.Kani (64) and K.Janani (17) admitted to government and private hospitals with burn injuries and short of breath. The fire broke out, after the compressor in a mini refrigerator exploded in one of the rooms at the hostel located in a two-storeyed decades’ old building. As fire and thick black smoke engulfed the building, the Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot, extinguished the fire and rescued around 34 inmates, who were trapped in the first and second floors of the hostel. Police arrested Inba Jegadeesan, who was running the hostel without renewing the license from Madurai City Corporation, despite a notice issued by the civic authorities during October last year to vacate and demolish the building due to its weak condition and posing threat to public safety...////...
