DMK Student's Wing holds protest against NEET

Chennai, July 3 (Reporter) The Student's Wing of the ruling DMK on Wednesday staged protest demonstrations across Tamil Nadu demanding abolition of NEET exams for admissions to UG MBBS courses. In Chennai, the demonstration, titled 'No More NEET" was held in front of Valluvar Kottam during which the DMK student's wing members, clad in black shirts shouted slogans denouncing the Centre. DMK students wing secretary C.V.M.P. Ezhilarasan, who led the agitation, accused the Union government of being adamant in the conduct the NEET irrespective of deaths reported and several irregularities flagged in the recent exams leading to reprimand by the Supreme Court. They also demanded that Tamil Nadu should be exempted from the purview of NEET and the state government should be allowed to make admissions based on the Plus-2 marks to protect the interests of rural and poor students. DMK Organising Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP, who took part in the protest, made a controversial remark stating that even dogs are getting BA degrees in Tamil Nadu today. The ruling DMK, which had also adopted a resolution in the State Assembly last week demanding scrapping of NEET and urging the Centre to get Presidential Assent to the Bill passed in the House, has been opposing NEET for long as it went against social justice Meanwhile, Mr Bharati's remarks drew Opposition from BJP State President K Annamalai. In a social media most, Mr Annamalai said whenever there is strong opposition to the DMK regime, it will project Mr Bharati. "Once before, in Tamil Nadu, he said that the DMK was begging for the posts of the Scheduled Castes in the courts. Today, DMK has said that the emergence of doctors in Tamil Nadu is due to begging", he said. "In addition to this, Mr. Bharathi has insulted the entire student community by saying that even dogs are getting BA degrees in Tamil Nadu today", he noted.
