Hyderabad, Sep 28 (Reporter) The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Hyderabad Zonal Unit (HZU) arrested three individuals and seized foreign-origin gold weighing 4,778 grams, valued at Rs 3.71 crore. Acting on specific intelligence regarding the movement of smuggled foreign-origin gold from Coimbatore, the DRI officials intercepted a red Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza at Raikal Toll Plaza, Telangana, on Friday. The vehicle, which was en route from Coimbatore to Hyderabad, was found to be carrying the smuggled gold, a DRI statement revealed on Saturday. During the investigation, it was discovered that the accused had concealed the foreign-origin gold in a specially designed-cavity below the car's handbrake. One of the suspects accessed the secret compartment by pulling a latch beneath the steering wheel, revealing four packets wrapped in brown tape. These packets contained a total of 18 gold bars and cut pieces of 24-karat gold, with 99.9 per cent purity, weighing 4,778 grams. The recovered gold, along with the vehicle, was seized by the authorities. The three individuals travelling in the car were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and have been remanded to judicial custody.
