Bengaluru, Aug 6 (Reporter) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday sharply criticised the state's opposition parties, labeling them a "group of opportunists" in a public meeting held earlier today.
Shivakumar, who is also the State Congress chief, took a caustic stance against his political rivals by showcasing old video clips of BJP and JD(S) leaders attacking each other on various issues.
During the address, Shivakumar projected confidence in the Congress party’s future, asserting that the opposition's tactics against the current government would ultimately fail. He expressed his belief that the Congress would remain in power in Karnataka for the next decade.
The Deputy Chief Minister used a giant screen to display footage of BJP and JD(S) leaders denouncing one another, emphasizing what he described as their opportunistic behavior.
The timing of Shivakumar’s comments is significant given the current political climate in Karnataka. Last year’s Assembly elections saw a triangular contest between Congress, BJP, and JD(S). However, in September, the JD(S) aligned with the BJP, and the two parties contested the recent Lok Sabha elections as an alliance.
In recent days, the BJP has been staging a week-long foot march from Bengaluru to Mysuru, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over alleged irregularities related to the Mysuru Urban Development Authority site allotment. In response, the Congress has been organising public meetings to counter the BJP’s campaign.
Shivakumar denounced the opposition for their alliance, suggesting that the BJP and JD(S) had only joined forces to oust Siddaramaiah, driven by resentment over his position as a leader from a backward community. He urged the public to reflect on the footage he presented and respond to what he perceives as the opposition's duplicity.
In his speech, Shivakumar also defended Congress party's previous actions, drawing comparisons between their past initiatives, such as the march for Cauvery water sharing and the Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir project, and the BJP’s current protest. He accused the opposition of merely copying Congress's strategies and dismissed their march as a "penance march" designed to divert attention from their own alleged corruption.
As the political battle intensifies, the Congress and opposition parties continue to vie for public support, with both sides vigorously defending their positions. The coming days are expected to see further developments in this ongoing political saga...////...
