Bengaluru, July 16 (Reporter) In the light of Cauvery water dispute escalating with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin calling an all-party meeting to decide on the next course of action, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday appealed to TN to permit the state to retain its water storage.
"We will cooperate in whatever way we can. We will give you whatever water we can, but permit us to retain our storage," Shivakumar told reporters, appealing to Stalin.
Stalin's move comes after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the state could only release 8,000 cusecs of water daily, instead of the mandated 1 TMC ft, citing water shortages in the state.
Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad urged for an amicable resolution, calling on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy to intervene.
The Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee (CWRC) had directed Karnataka to release 1 TMC ft of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu between July 12 and July 31. However, Karnataka's decision has been deemed "strongly condemnable" and a "betrayal to the farmers of Tamil Nadu" by Stalin.
Protests erupted in Tamil Nadu, with CPI and CPI(M) workers disrupting train services. The all-party meeting called by Stalin will determine the next course of action for Tamil Nadu.
