EC approves Sanjay Verma’s appointment as new Maha DGP

Mumbai, Nov 5 (Reporter) Sanjay Verma, an IPS officer from the 1990 batch, was on Tuesday appointed as new Director General of Police (DGP) after the Election Commission gave its approval following former DGP Rashmi Shukla being asked to step down on multiple complaints filed by Congress and other opposition parties. IPS Sanjay Verma was leading the list of candidates for the full-time DGP position. Verma is currently serving as Director General of Legal and Technical. He is set to retire in April 2028. Verma, a veteran law enforcement officer currently as DGP (Legal & Technical), heads the state Forensic Sciences Laboratories for crime detection and investigation and is credited with upgrading the forensic infrastructure for the collection and preservation of evidence. Verma succeeds Shukla, who belongs to the 1988 batch. . The state government initially chose to place Shukla on leave rather than remove her outright. Shukla's tenure has been marked by controversy, including three FIRs related to the telephone tapping of various politicians. The decision came after sustained pressure from the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar). Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik had submitted a panel of three IPS officers to the Election Commission, comprising Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, Sanjay Verma, and Ritesh Kumar...////...
