ECI first leader Bishop Ezra Sargunam to be buried with police honours, Stalin pays homage

Chennai, Sep 26 (Reporter) After paying homage to the body of Father Bishop Ezra Sargunam who passed away on Sunday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday announced that the first national leader of Evangelical Church of India (ECI) would be buried with police honours . The burial service will be held this evening. Earlier, Mr Stalin accompanied by his Cabinet colleagues, Greater Chennai Corporation Mayor Ms R Priya paid homage to the body of the Bishop at Vaanagaram. Later, in a statement, he said the 86-year-old Bishop had continuously served for the Tamil society, especially for the oppressed classes, till his death. His body will be buried at the Kilpauk cemetry today with police honours, he said. In his condolence message, Stalin recalled his long association with late DMK leader and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. “The death of bishop Ezra Sargunam, who has been working to protect the welfare of the minorities, is a big loss not only to those in the Christian faith but to believers of social justice,” he said.
