Bengaluru, Sept 28 (Reporter) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday demanded the resignation of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman after a Bengaluru court ordered police to file an FIR against her in connection with allegations of extortion related to electoral bonds. Siddaramaiah questioned why the BJP has remained silent on the matter, suggesting that an impartial investigation could also lead to the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He further called for the resignation of Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy, a BJP ally and former Karnataka Chief Minister. "The court has ordered the filing of an FIR against Sitharaman in connection with the electoral bond scam. When will the Karnataka BJP begin protests for her resignation? If an unbiased inquiry is conducted, even the Prime Minister will have to step down. Let Kumaraswamy, who is out on bail, also resign," Siddaramaiah said during a press conference. Kumaraswamy fired back, questioning the grounds for resignation and denying any wrongdoing. "The Chief Minister is asking for our resignations, but did the electoral bond money go to Nirmala Sitharaman’s personal account? Why should she or I resign?" he said in a statement. The court’s order, issued on Friday, following a petition from Adarsh Iyer, a representative of the Janadhikar Sangharsh Parishad (JSP), who sought legal action against Sitharaman and others for allegedly extorting funds through electoral bonds. In response to the petition, the court directed Bengaluru’s Tilak Nagar police to register an FIR against Sitharaman, escalating tensions in the ongoing political battle over the controversial bonds. Electoral bonds, introduced in 2018, allow anonymous donations to political parties, and critics argue the system lacks transparency, potentially allowing illicit funds to flow into election campaigns.
