Chennai, Jan 7 (Reporter) The bye-election to the Erode East Assembly seat will be held on February five, the Election Commission of India announced on Tuesday. The seat in all probability will be again allotted to the Congress as it had won in 2021 Assembly elections and the 2023 bypoll. The bypoll, the second in two years, was necessitated following the death of Senior Congress Leader and sitting MLA EVKS Elangovan in December last year. This is the third election to this seat since 2021 in which Mr Elangovan's son Thiru Mahan E.Ve.Ra was elected to the Assembly for the first time. However, his untimely death resulted in bypoll held on February 28, 2023 and it was won by Mr Elangovan, who is also a former Union Minister and former TNCC President, by highest ever margin of over 66,000 votes and entered the State Assembly after a gap of 39 years. However, his unfortunate death last month, has now resulted in yet another bypoll to the State. TNCC President K Selvaperunthagai, who is also the Congress Legislature Party Leader, the Party High Command would speak to DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on allotting the seat to the Congress as it was held by it and announce the name of the candidate. The ECI said the model code of conduct for the February 5 bypoll to the Erode East seat, has come into immediate effect. Filing of nominations will begin on January 10 and the last date for filing of nominations was January 17. The scrutiny will be held the next day and the last date for withdrawals is January 20.
