Chennai, Feb 10 (Reporter) Ruling DMK's V C Chandrakumar, who was elected by a margin of more
than 90,000 votes in the February five bypoll to the Erode East Assembly constituency, was on Monday sworn in as the member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
Assembly Speaker M Appavu administered the oath to Chandrakumar in his Chamber at the State Secretariat.
Chief Minister M K Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister MK Stalin, Leader of the House and Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan, Deputy Speaker K Pitchandi, Ministers and the Government
Chief Whip were present on the occasion, an official release said.
In the bypoll--boycotted by opposition parties--necessitated following the death of Congress MLA EVKS Elangovan in December last year, the seat was contested by the DMK and Chandrakumar defeated NTK candidate Ms M S Seethalakshmi by a margin of more than 90,000 votes and
became MLA for the second time.
Earlier, he was elected to the Assembly as a DMDK MLA in 2011, when the Constituency came into being after delimitation and lost in the next elections in 2016 to AIADMK when he contested under
the DMK ticket.
In 2021, Thirumahan Ev Raa, son of Mr Elangovan, won his maiden election when the seat was allotted to the Congress. Following his untimely death, a bypoll was held and Mr Elangovan--a
former Union Minister and TNCC President--got elected to the Assembly after a gap of 39 years.
However, his sudden unfortunate death resulted in yet another byelection which the DMK contested and won by a landslide margin this time.
