Kalaburagi, May 21 (Reporter) Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday predicted a potential split within the Congress party at the National level, which could have repercussions in Karnataka.
Speaking to media persons in Kalaburagi, Bommai highlighted intense conflicts and competition within the State unit of the Congress, indicating a struggle for the Chief Minister's seat. He drew parallels with historical instances where party divisions led to abrupt changes in leadership.
"Intense conflicts and fierce competition within the State unit of the Congress are undeniable. There's a clear power struggle, with one faction aggressively vying for the Chief Minister's seat while the incumbent remains resolute.
"History shows that such internal rivalries can fracture parties overnight, and this looming split could reverberate nationally, significantly impacting Karnataka," he stated.
Reflecting on Karnataka's political history, the former Chief Minister referenced Veerendra Patil's sudden resignation as Chief Minister. He recounted past instances of Congress division despite the electoral success, emphasising the impact of political ambition on stability.
"Even with Devaraj Urs assuming the Chief Minister's role following his party's substantial victory of over 130 seats in the State, the Congress found itself fragmented. With limited prominent leaders like Gundu Rao, Bangarappa, and Veerappa Moily, the government's stability was fragile. Overnight, Gundu Rao ascended to the Chief Minister's position, followed by Bangarappa and Moily." he said.
"This historical precedent underscores that in politics, sheer numbers hold less sway than the intricate political landscape. The enduring impact lies in leaders' ambitions, which often overshadow mere differences of opinion. Hence, we keenly observe the unfolding post-Lok Sabha election dynamics," Bommai remarked.
Later addressing graduates, he sought support for BJP candidate Amarnath Patil, criticising the ruling Congress for alleged corruption in the education sector.
Claiming his government's commitment to educational development, Bommai accused the Congress of neglecting initiatives such as the construction of 27,000 classrooms. He lamented the rejection of the National Education Policy 2020, attributing it to political motives and warning of adverse effects on students' futures.
