Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, July 5 (Reporter) The Maharashtra government has given compensation to families of 169 farmers who allegedly committed suicide due to agrarian distress in the last six months, sources in Divisional Commissioner’s office said on Friday.
Official sources said initial reports suggested that, on an average, three farmers were ending their lives daily in the Marathwada region, a trend which was still to be confirmed.
The various district administrations are still verifying reports claiming that over the past six months 430 farmers committed suicide, they said.
Sources said out of the 430 suspected suicide cases, 256 have, so far, been found eligible for compensation. As per the rules, compensation has been given to next of kins of 169 deceased by the respective district administrations.
A maximum number of 101 suspected farmer suicides were reported in Beed district in the last six months, said sources.
Osmanabad district reported 76 , Nanded 68 , Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district 64, Jalna district 40, Latur district 33, Parbhani district 31 and Hingoli district 17, sources said...////...
