Filing of nomination papers for LS poll gets over in Gujarat

Gandhinagar, April 20 (Reporter) A total of 227 candidates have submitted nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat, alongside 13 candidates for the state assembly bye-elections on the last day of filing nominations. Gujarat Chief Electoral Officer P. Bharti announced the numbers in a statement on Saturday. The last day for filing nominations was Friday. A total of 26 parliamentary constituencies in PM Narendra Modi's home state will face voting in the third phase on May 7 when 5 crore voters will cast their votes. The nomination process began on April 12. Between April 12 and 15, a total of 31 candidates filed their nominations for the Lok Sabha elections and four candidates for the assembly bye-elections. On April 16, 103 candidates filed their nominations for the Lok Sabha elections and eight candidates for the assembly bye-elections. On April 18, there were 130 candidates who filed their nominations for the Lok Sabha elections and 14 candidates for the assembly bye-elections. Bharti mentioned that the scrutiny of nomination papers will commence on April 20 at 11 am, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until 3 pm on April 22. The first randomisation of electronic voting machines (EVMs) has been completed in all districts of the state, allocating EVMs from the district level to the Assembly Segment (AC) level. The second randomisation of EVMs will be conducted in the presence of candidates or their representatives and a designated Chief Observer appointed by the Election Commission of India. The voter list consists over 4.19 lakh senior citizens aged 85 years and above, and more than 3.75 lakh differently-abled voters, constituting 40 per cent or more of the registered disabled voters. Procedures are underway to distribute Form-12D to these voters and facilitate their postal voting. A meeting was also held with nodal officers at the state and district levels to explain the process of voting by postal ballot. Voting for all 26 Lok Sabha seats and five assembly seats will take place on May 7, with the counting scheduled for June 4 and the electoral process concluding on June 6...////...
